LOS ANGELES RHINOPLASTY

Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) surgery, is one of the more commonly requested procedures in Dr. Hoefflin's practice. The nose is considered one the face's dominant features, and subtle changes can greatly enhance one's appearance and self-confidence. Because of today's improved surgical techniques, safer and more comfortable anesthesia, and a faster recovery, patients are highly satisfied after their rhinoplasty procedure.

Dr. Hoefflin's goals in performing nasal surgery are twofold: to create a natural, attractive, and artistically contoured appearance while correcting any structural abnormalities that prevent proper breathing. Natural irregularities can often be smoothed by adding cartilage taken from the septum (the wall between the nasal cavities) or, occasionally, from the back of the ear. Under Dr. Hoefflin's expert care, the nose is sculpted and recontoured to achieve a more balanced and natural appearance.

Rhinoplasty is frequently performed in combination with other complimentary cosmetic surgery procedures, such as cheek and chin implants, and facial liposuctioning or facial fat grafting to enhance the overall aesthetic result.

During your consultation with Dr. Hoefflin, an individual facial analysis, along with digital photography, will allow him to provide you with his professional expertise and surgical recommendations. At the same time, your aesthetic goals will be discussed at length. He will determine if you are in fact a good candidate for a rhinoplasty procedure. Customized literature that discusses the rhinoplasty procedure will be provided. Before and after photographs of similar rhinoplasty patients will be reviewed.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Dr. Hoefflin performs his Los Angeles and Beverly Hills rhinoplasty procedures as an outpatient under general anesthesia, or deep intravenous sedation, administed by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The procedure generally takes 1-2 hours, depending upon the level of desired sculpting. All operations are performed in fully credentialed and state-of-the-art surgical facilities.

Nasal incisions are performed inside the nose or along it's natural creases, concealing all incisions and leaving no noticeable evidence of surgery. The nasal cartilages and bones and sculpted to meet the patient's individual aesthetic goals. If necessary, enlarged nostrils may be reduced through tiny incisions along the outer base of the nostrils. Dissolvable sutures are used inside the nose at the completion of your surgery.

In patients who experience breathing difficulties, an adequate airway passage is created by either straightening or removing the distorted septum (septoplasty) or by reducing nasal turbinate blockage.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER SURGERY

After surgery, patients are discharged home with a form-fitting nasal splint for five to seven days. Once the splint is removed, the nose is then lightly taped for a day or two to decrease swelling. Head elevation and ice compresses are encouraged for the first few days after surgery to minimize any bruising or swelling. A slight to moderate amount of bruising around the eyes is common. This will usually resolve in five to seven days.

Our patients are surprisingly free of discomfort due to the long-acting local anesthetic injections and nerve blocks. Pain after surgery is unusual. Any residual discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication. Small and meticulously placed self-absorbing sutures provide little discomfort and are usually gone within seven days.

Most patients tell us they feel better than expected following their surgery and are able to return to work and social activities within seven to ten days. Light exercise can be resumed at two weeks. Final results can be appreciated anywhere from 3 to 12 months after surgery.

RISKS

When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, the risk of serious problems after Los Angeles rhinoplasty are rare. Most complications are minor, temporary, and can be easily resolved with conservative treatment and time. Specific risks and the suitability of rhinoplasty procedure for a given individual can be determined at the time of consultation. You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following your surgeon's instructions both before and after surgery.

Rhinoplasty is not covered by insurance if being done for cosmetic reasons. However, if the nasal deformity is due to recent injury, or if pre-existing breathing problems are attributed to a deviated septum or hypertrophied turbinates, coverage may be available.
